TOOLS OF THE TRADE

May 14, 2016

One of my favorite aspects of resist dyeing is that you can do it in an eco-friendly way. All the tools below were salvaged from a behind a friend’s house (pvc pipe, woodworker dowel scrap, discarded wood planks, and even a discarded chop stick). Any type of material can be used to create the most interesting patterns. I also find myself dyeing any clothing that is stained and destined to be thrown out….just leave it in an Indigo dye bath until the hue is dark enough to hide the stain (with multiple rounds of oxidation).

Curious about what the binding material below is? Waxed hemp, sewing thread, rubber bands, plumber’s tape and plastic wrap.

RESIST DYEING WITH BINDER CLIPS

May 12, 2016

With resist dyeing, you will always be surprised when you experiment with everyday items. I recently used some metal binder clips and the outcome was quite nice, the slender motifs resemble butterflies! This cloth was made by folding a simple accordion fold and placing the clips 5″ apart in a half-drop repeat.
